The breed

Foxhounds are athletic, medium-to-large scent hounds with a lean, sturdy build made for endurance. They have long legs, deep chests, broad heads, and soft, drooping ears. Their short, dense coats are often tricolor—black, white, and tan—though other hound color patterns occur. Their expression is alert and gentle, reflecting their strong sense of smell and energetic nature.

These dogs are generally friendly, sociable, and cheerful, especially around other dogs. Foxhounds were developed to work in packs, so they often enjoy company and can be independent-minded when following an interesting scent. They tend to be lively, determined, and vocal, with the classic baying voice associated with hounds. Their affectionate but spirited personality suits an active, outdoors-oriented household.
