Shiba Inu

The breed

The Shiba Inu is a compact, foxlike Japanese dog with a curled tail, upright triangular ears, and an alert expression. Its double coat is plush and straight, commonly seen in red, sesame, black and tan, or cream. Shibas have a sturdy, balanced build and move with quick, light steps that match their lively appearance.

Shiba Inus are often described as bold, independent, and spirited. They can be affectionate with familiar people while remaining reserved around strangers. Their strong-willed nature and keen awareness give them a confident, almost catlike personality. Playful and curious, they are known for expressive behavior and a distinctive vocal style sometimes called the “Shiba scream.”
