The breed

The Basset Hound is a low-slung, sturdy dog with very short legs, a long body, and a broad head. Its most recognizable features are its long, velvety ears, loose facial skin, soulful eyes, and wrinkled brow. The breed usually has a smooth, dense coat in combinations of white, black, tan, lemon, or red. Despite its compact height, it has a surprisingly heavy, substantial build.

Basset Hounds are generally gentle, affectionate, and easygoing companions. They are known for their patient nature and often get along well with families and other dogs. Originally developed as scent hounds, they have an excellent nose and may become very focused when they catch an interesting smell. Their calm expression can hide a playful, stubborn, and independent streak.

Are you looking for a scent hound to enjoy slow walks and follow interesting smells? Consider a Basset Hound for that laid-back companion role.
