The breed

The American Water Spaniel is a medium-sized sporting dog known for its curly, chocolate-brown coat, keen expression, and love of the water. This American Water Spaniel dog breed is energetic, affectionate, and versatile. It is a rare breed, and one of the few developed in the United States.

American Water Spaniel Breed Overview

The American Water Spaniel breed was developed in the Fox River Valley of Wisconsin in the 1800s. Hunters wanted a compact, all-purpose dog that could flush and retrieve game from small boats and rough water. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1940, and it is the official state dog of Wisconsin.

Adults typically weigh 25 to 45 pounds and stand 15 to 18 inches tall. They usually live 10 to 14 years. The water-resistant coat is curly or wavy, comes in liver or brown, and sheds lightly to moderately.

American Water Spaniel Temperament

American Water Spaniels are eager, friendly, and people-oriented. They bond closely with their families and are often wary of strangers. They are energetic and playful, and many have a strong drive to swim, chase, and retrieve. They do well with active households and with respectful children, but they dislike being left alone for long stretches.

American Water Spaniel Training

This is an intelligent dog breed that wants a job to do. Reward-based training works best, and these sensitive dogs respond poorly to harsh methods. Early socialization helps with shyness around strangers. Retrieving games, scent work, and swimming keep them engaged. A professional dog trainer can help with recall, manners, and sporting skills such as field work or dock diving.

American Water Spaniel Feeding and Nutrition

American Water Spaniels do best on a high-quality diet matched to their age and activity level. Active hunting dogs need more calories, while less active pets gain weight quickly, so measure portions and count treats. Their needs shift from puppy to adult to senior, which is where a dog nutritionist can help.

American Water Spaniel Grooming, Exercise, and Health

The curly coat needs brushing a few times a week and occasional trimming. Check and clean the ears regularly, since drop ears and frequent swimming raise the risk of infections. Exercise needs are high. Plan on an hour or more of daily activity, ideally including swimming. The American Water Spaniel is generally a healthy dog breed, but hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, progressive retinal atrophy, and heart conditions such as mitral valve dysplasia can occur. Regular vet visits and a healthy weight support a long, active life.

Traveling With an American Water Spaniel

As a medium-sized dog, an American Water Spaniel usually travels in a sturdy, well-ventilated crate. Check airline and cargo policies early, and avoid extreme heat. Because the breed is rare, many owners travel long distances to bring home a puppy from a breeder. For a long-distance move, a new puppy, or a trip where your dog cannot come along, a vetted pet transport professional can handle the logistics safely.

Is the American Water Spaniel the Right Dog Breed for You?

The American Water Spaniel suits active owners who want an affectionate, versatile companion and are ready for daily exercise, regular training, and ear and coat care. It is a less natural fit for homes that are empty all day, owners wanting a low-energy dog, or anyone who wants a breed that is easy to find.
