Petworks Pet Spotlight: Meet Senna Bonn

Meet Senna Bonn: The Calico Queen of Curiosity! Senna Bonn, who resides in Safety Harbor, Florida, is a four-year-old domestic shorthair. She’s a dazzling calico cat, with a coat as vibrant as her personality. Like most calicos, Senna is female, thanks to the genetics that make her breed so unique. But beyond her stunning tri-colored fur lies a feline brimming with charm, quirks, and a zest for life.

Petworks Pet Care HedgehogWhen it comes to mealtime, Senna has a refined feline palate, favoring Fancy Feast’s seafood flavors and delighting in lobster treats. These gourmet preferences fuel her daily adventures, whether she’s perched by the window birdwatching, or stealthily lizard hunting in her backyard. Indoors, Senna’s energy bursts to life as she chases a small ball around the house with laser focus.

Senna’s personality is as playful as it is puzzling. She’s been known to swat and nip at unsuspecting ankles, a cat behavior her humans chalk up to her mischievous streak. A hide-and-seek enthusiast, she loves to disappear into any small box or laundry basket, her calico fur peeking out like a work of art.

Her most heartwarming habit? The way she purrs softly while kneading her bed with her paws, lovingly known as “making bread.” This display of contentment and affection melts hearts and serves as a reminder of how deeply Senna loves her home.

A Rough Start

Sadly, Senna’s birth mom abandoned her at just two weeks’ old. Thankfully, her adopting human family took her in and began bottle feeding her.  What a lucky girl.

Senna in reflection

Senna Bonn isn’t just a pet…she’s a spirited, loving companion who fills her household with laughter, warmth, and a dash of unpredictability. Whether she’s snoozing after a busy day or darting through the house in a playful frenzy, Senna embodies the joy of life with every whisker twitch and paw step.

“Cats of all colors and patterns, whether they’re Domestic Shorthairs, calicos, or any other coat type, bring unique personalities into our homes. Understanding their behavior. Their cues, instincts, and social nature… helps us build strong, trusting bonds with them and enrich their lives as well as ours.” – Kevin Kinyon, Co‑Founder of Petworks

Domestic Shorthair & Calico Cat FAQ

Looking to adopt a Domestic Shorthair or calico cat? This FAQ covers everything from personality traits and lifespan to grooming and adoption costs.

1. What is a Domestic Shorthair (DSH) cat?

A Domestic Shorthair is a mixed-breed cat with a short coat. They are not a specific breed but a broad category encompassing cats with varied ancestry. Domestic Shorthairs can have any coat color or pattern, including tabby, solid, bicolor, tortoiseshell, and calico.

2. What is a calico cat?

A calico cat is defined by its tri-color coat, usually white, black, and orange. Calico refers to a color pattern, not a breed, and many calicos are Domestic Shorthairs. Most calico cats are female due to genetics, though male calicos are extremely rare.

3. What do Domestic Shorthair and calico cats look like?

  • Domestic Shorthairs: Highly variable in appearance. They can be solid-colored, striped (tabby), spotted, or patched. Eyes can range from green and amber to blue.

  • Calicos: Always have three distinct colors—white, black, and orange—usually in patchwork patterns. They often have striking eye colors.

4. What is the personality of a Domestic Shorthair and calico cat?

Domestic Shorthairs are friendly, playful, and adaptable, making them excellent pets for families. Calico cats often have a reputation for strong-willed, independent personalities, but they can also be affectionate and loyal.

5. How long do Domestic Shorthairs and calicos live?

They typically live 12–20 years, with indoor cats generally living longer than outdoor cats. Regular vet checkups, a healthy diet, and exercise are key to a long, healthy life.

6. Are Domestic Shorthair and calico cats healthy?

Yes. Their genetic diversity makes them generally hardy and less prone to inherited health problems than many purebred cats.

7. How much grooming do Domestic Shorthairs and calicos need?

Short-haired coats are low-maintenance. Brushing once a week is usually enough to remove loose fur and prevent hairballs. Bathing is rarely necessary.

8. Do Domestic Shorthairs and calicos shed?

Yes, though less than long-haired cats. Regular brushing and a proper diet help manage shedding.

9. How much do Domestic Shorthair and calico cats cost?

Many are available for adoption at shelters or rescues. Adoption fees typically range from $50–$150 and often include spaying/neutering, vaccinations, and microchipping.

10. Are Domestic Shorthair and calico cats easy to train?

Yes. They are intelligent and curious, responding well to positive reinforcement. Litter box training, basic tricks, and even leash training are achievable.

11. Do Domestic Shorthairs and calicos get along with other pets?

Generally, yes. They are social and adaptable, but early socialization is important. Most get along well with other cats, dogs, and children.

12. Are Domestic Shorthairs and calicos hypoallergenic?

No cat is truly hypoallergenic. They produce allergen proteins similar to other cats, though their short coats make grooming easier for allergy sufferers.

13. How can I adopt a Domestic Shorthair or calico cat?

Most are available at animal shelters, rescue groups, and humane societies. Many are already spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, making adoption simple and affordable.
