Prior to that pet birds were able to survive with nothing more than their wings, feathers and zygodactyl feet for 120 million years.
This is where we start.
Unfortunately, the majority of pet bird keepers get much of their husbandry wrong because they don't take into account those 120 million years of instinctual expectations the bird has of its surroundings.
North American light cycles are erratic at best and yet birds expect 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness coming from equatorial regions of the earth.
Birds sleep on dozens of branches of trees in the wild while we offer them a single dowel rod or grooming perch to sleep on.
Birds then develop sore feet which we often fail to notice which leads to negative behavior like feather plucking.
We force pellet diet upon our pet birds and yet there are no pellet trees in the rain forest.
In the wild birds spend 60% of their time looking for food and 40% of their time trying not to be food.
Yet we offer overflowing bowls of seeds and nuts and introduce far too few toys in the bird's cage not providing the privacy these birds are seeking.
Bird cages are placed in the middle of the room so everybody can be entertained, not taking into account that the bird would much rather be settled between two walls in the home and not so exposed.
