I have owned and trained my own dogs for decades. But then I met my match - Charlie M. Wiggles, a rescue with boundless energy and born to run. I was at my wits end and close to rehoming Mr. Wiggles. My shoulders hurt from his pulling. He has no "off" button, is so strong, and runs to meet and conquer any human of any age, any other dog, any front door anywhere - and he's a fence jumper. The text sightings of Charlie M. Wiggles around the neighborhood were embarrassing. Moreover, I was afraid of Mr. Wiggles jumping on an unsuspecting person or child and harming them with love. I bought a Halo collar, but didn't want to misuse it because Mr. Wiggles is the happiest pup I have ever met and I did not want to break his spirit. Then I met Mike Brand from Desert Canine. Everything changed. Mike's training methods are seamless. His knowledge of dog psychology v. people psychology is amazing. Mike trained me to train the dog. Now Charlie has boundaries. If I leave doors and gates open, he doesn't disappear. In the desert or forest, I can walk him with or without a leash. Since he knows his boundaries, he doesn't test them much anymore. I know the Collar sets boundaries for him, but Mike taught me how to effectively teach the boundaries by rewarding Mr. Wiggles for respecting his boundaries instead punishing him (static/shock feedback) for crossing them. There is still so much more I need to do, but I am now confident that my husband and I are becoming the proud dog parents of a well trained super happy pup. Thank you Mike and Desert Canine! - Phoenix, AZ

Michael is wonderful! I rescued a dog who was good with kids but reactive with other dogs. I was at a loss. Michael to the rescue! He taught me the skills I needed to work with my dog and to be able to take her for a walk and enjoy it! He is knowledgeable and loves the dogs and loves his work. I highly recommend Michael!

After trying several trainers without little progress, I found Mike- and I’m so glad I did. My dog is fearful and sometimes reacts aggressively, but Mike’s expertise and patience made all the difference. He quickly identified triggers and provided real, effective solutions. Best of all, he helped train me to handle situations better. Thanks to Mike, we’re finally seeing real progress. Highly recommend!

Mike is awesome. He is patient and understanding to the needs of the dogs and their owners. He is working with us and our 2 Yorkie puppies and we have seen such a great improvement in our boys. We are continuing our work with Mike and are so happy with his style of training.

Recommended Certifications for Dog Trainers

When choosing a dog trainer, professional certifications are a strong indicator of expertise, experience, and commitment to ethical, science-based methods. Widely recognized credentials include the CPDT-KA or CPDT-KSA from the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, which demonstrate mastery of modern training techniques, canine behavior, and learning theory. The KPA-CTP (Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner) highlights trainers skilled in positive reinforcement and clicker training, while the IAABC Certified Dog Trainer credential, recognized internationally, signals advanced knowledge in behavior modification and problem-solving. Membership or certification through the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT) further reflects ongoing education and adherence to ethical standards. Many trainers also pursue specialty certifications in areas such as aggression management, behavior modification, or puppy development to address specific challenges.

For pet parents, choosing a certified trainer like Michael Brand, ensures that your dog’s training is grounded in science, safety, and compassion. Asking about a trainer’s credentials is one of the best ways to make a confident, informed choice.
