Whit Dogs Training Services - Mendon, MA

Member since Dec 2021

After training several of our dogs with many different dog trainers over the years, I decided to become a trainer myself. Having done obedience, agility, rally, disc and scent work, I was able to work with some of the best trainers around and was able to learn what I liked and did not like about their training methods and teaching styles. I was also lucky enough to be able to shadow a couple of my mentors, took many in-person and online courses and started teaching group classes on my own back in 2013. Since then, I retired from my professional career as a court reporter and became a full-time dog trainer.

Being certified was always important to me, so I chose to go through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers’ program, which requires a lot of study, hands-on training and actual teaching hours to apply to take the test. I passed the test in 2017 and have been certified and re-certified since. The continuing education that one must do to re-certify is something I enjoy, because you can always learn something new.

From having five dogs of my own, fostering for many years and working in a large kennel, I know that every dog is different, as is every person. One size fits all does not work in dog training, and figuring out what does work for each team is what I enjoy the most.

The services I currently offer are puppy training, basic obedience, socialization, behavioral issues, AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy class, Canine Good Citizen class, intro to fitness and intro to agility.

Recommended Certifications for Dog Trainers

When choosing a dog trainer, professional certifications are a strong indicator of expertise, experience, and commitment to ethical, science-based methods. Widely recognized credentials include the CPDT-KA or CPDT-KSA from the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, which demonstrate mastery of modern training techniques, canine behavior, and learning theory. The KPA-CTP (Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner) highlights trainers skilled in positive reinforcement and clicker training, while the IAABC Certified Dog Trainer credential, recognized internationally, signals advanced knowledge in behavior modification and problem-solving. Membership or certification through the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT) further reflects ongoing education and adherence to ethical standards. Many trainers also pursue specialty certifications in areas such as aggression management, behavior modification, or puppy development to address specific challenges.

For pet parents, choosing a certified trainer like Carol Whitney, ensures that your dog’s training is grounded in science, safety, and compassion. Asking about a trainer’s credentials is one of the best ways to make a confident, informed choice.
