Customer Reviews
Karen is such a skilled, professional dog trainer. I highly recommend using this training academy! I could see the love and caring of training my crazy schnauzer. It is a great start in getting him to be less reactive. Now the hard part in the follow through of us continuing in the foundation that was made! Thank you! - Claremont CA
- Jenny JSuch a quick and thorough explanation. Very helpful and informative. My sister had a great experience with this organization and her young golden doodle. I just got a new Bernedoodle rescue and would like this service. - Covina, CA - December 2025
- Amy PI LOVE bringing our pup, Alani, here. We started with a group basic obedience class for 6 weeks and we loved our trainer Mekenna. We were somewhat sad it had to end. After the group class, our dog was uneasy & somewhat fearful with other dogs and not sure how to play with them, so we began taking her to Yappy Hour (an hour of play for the pups). She was nervous and wouldn't leave our side for the first few weeks but with consistency she got more acclimated and now runs around the entire hour. Alani has met some of her best of friends at Yappy Hour and always gets so excited to go! I even get excited to go. I love seeing them play together and chat with all the other owners. (Yappy Hour is always monitored by a trainer and all the owners are kind and respectful with their dogs. They have a Yappy Hour for small dogs and big dogs.) Later, our dog developed some reactivity problems to dogs she has not met before. So we did a 4 week 1:1 training with Mekenna and have seen such incredible improvement! Alani is by no means perfect, and we still have to put in the work because again consistency is key, but I don't believe we would have been able to have improved this much so quickly without our trainer Mekenna training not only Alani but us as owners. (See some of the videos for how she does on walks now around other dogs.) I want to shoutout Mekenna for truly taking Alani under her wing and being so supportive of us and her training process. She has truly been a blessing to us. Now, I have not worked directly with the other trainers there, but I have had an opportunity to meet some of them while doing her 1:1 trainings and they are all so kind and supportive of your training goals. If you are looking for a place for your dog to train and/or play, this is the place to be! - San Fernando Valley, CA

Recommended Certifications for Dog Trainers
When choosing a dog trainer, professional certifications are a strong indicator of expertise, experience, and commitment to ethical, science-based methods. Widely recognized credentials include the CPDT-KA or CPDT-KSA from the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, which demonstrate mastery of modern training techniques, canine behavior, and learning theory. The KPA-CTP (Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner) highlights trainers skilled in positive reinforcement and clicker training, while the IAABC Certified Dog Trainer credential, recognized internationally, signals advanced knowledge in behavior modification and problem-solving. Membership or certification through the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT) further reflects ongoing education and adherence to ethical standards. Many trainers also pursue specialty certifications in areas such as aggression management, behavior modification, or puppy development to address specific challenges.
For pet parents, choosing a certified trainer like Karen Widaman, ensures that your dog’s training is grounded in science, safety, and compassion. Asking about a trainer’s credentials is one of the best ways to make a confident, informed choice.
