Customer Reviews
Maura came into our home and gave us some great basic building blocks for training our 3 hounds. The dogs had formal training at a facility but acted quite different at home - since they like to guard the house. Maura was able to identify the “ring leader” of our pack and help us with de-escalating situations, giving the hounds mental stimulation and educating me as an owner as to how to handle these situations. I’m very excited to move forward with more training. I have never been able to have a guest in our home without chaotic barking and jumping and by the end of her visit, ALL 3 were calmer and doing great with re-directing. Thank you so much Maura! Can’t wait to have another session! - Taunton, MA - May 2025
- Kristie GI have had the pleasure of working with Maura with 3 of my dogs now. Daphne worked with Maura on her reactive anxiety around other dogs by attending pack walks. Drake worked on impulse management and basic obedience as a puppy, then rejoined the Clear Skies family at pack walks a bit later in his life. When we adopted Odin, he started to show some behavioral challenges after settling in to our house, and we called a behavioral vet and brought Maura in right away. We were struggling with Odin not giving warning signs that he was upset with Drake, and immediately jumping to starting a fight, resource guarding, and a few other fear related behaviors. We were at a spot where we were facing a decision about whether Odin could stay in our family or if we would need to make a difficult decision to return him through his rescue. Our main goal was to do whatever we could to keep Odin in our home if we could find safe ways for both of our dogs to live comfortably. Maura’s guidance has been invaluable for not only us, but for repairing Odin and Drake’s relationship, being able to boost Odin’s confidence in himself, manage his behavior safely, and keep him in his home where he is safe, loved, and understood. Between in home training sessions, pack walks, agility, scent work, basic obedience, and CGC class, we’ve done everything we can to learn from Maura and grow with our dogs. I recommend her to everyone I know struggling with specific behaviors or even just hoping to learn how to better support their dogs basic commands. I always feel my dogs are safe and supported, and our behavioral vet has been thrilled with the work Maura has helped us to do to bring out the best of Odin. - Mansfield, Massachusetts

Recommended Certifications for Dog Trainers
When choosing a dog trainer, professional certifications are a strong indicator of expertise, experience, and commitment to ethical, science-based methods. Widely recognized credentials include the CPDT-KA or CPDT-KSA from the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, which demonstrate mastery of modern training techniques, canine behavior, and learning theory. The KPA-CTP (Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner) highlights trainers skilled in positive reinforcement and clicker training, while the IAABC Certified Dog Trainer credential, recognized internationally, signals advanced knowledge in behavior modification and problem-solving. Membership or certification through the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT) further reflects ongoing education and adherence to ethical standards. Many trainers also pursue specialty certifications in areas such as aggression management, behavior modification, or puppy development to address specific challenges.
For pet parents, choosing a certified trainer like Maura Porter, ensures that your dog’s training is grounded in science, safety, and compassion. Asking about a trainer’s credentials is one of the best ways to make a confident, informed choice.
