How did you hone your craft?
I figured out what my passion was - helping animals in need AND helping the people that love them. From there I did all I could to learn - online courses, mentors, books, videos, etc. I'm a sponge when it comes to dogs, their behaviors and how to correct problems.
What tip would you give pet parents for working with animals that you've learned as a pro?
Stay calm, be patient and do the work. I never guarantee anything from my training programs other than, if you do the work you will see the results. Everyone has a different definition of what a "perfect dog" should act like - "perfection" is not guaranteed.
What is one thing you want pet parents to know about you? It can be whatev-fur you'd like!
One thing to know about me is that I am as transparent as they come. I don't sugarcoat anything when it comes to my clients and their dogs. It might not be what you wanted to hear but it is what you needed to hear.

Customer Reviews
Kate is wonderful! My dogs love her and any delay in their training has been my lack of training the dogs, not Kate. She has been dog training for 15 years and knows her stuff! I highly recommend Kate Mahoney and Freedom Walk Training! Prices are great! - Palmdale, CA
- Kristy SKate took on our “twin” German Shepherds who had started to run the house. They had anxiety when separated from each other, one was overly obsessed with toys, and neither did well on a leash. They would only listen to the alpha male in the house, when they wanted to. After much needed training they now listen to all 5 of us, they follow basic commands, and we can walk them on leashes without being dragged down the road! Kate has worked wonders on them and gotten them to be obedient dogs and not running the house anymore!

Recommended Certifications for Dog Trainers
When choosing a dog trainer, professional certifications are a strong indicator of expertise, experience, and commitment to ethical, science-based methods. Widely recognized credentials include the CPDT-KA or CPDT-KSA from the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, which demonstrate mastery of modern training techniques, canine behavior, and learning theory. The KPA-CTP (Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner) highlights trainers skilled in positive reinforcement and clicker training, while the IAABC Certified Dog Trainer credential, recognized internationally, signals advanced knowledge in behavior modification and problem-solving. Membership or certification through the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT) further reflects ongoing education and adherence to ethical standards. Many trainers also pursue specialty certifications in areas such as aggression management, behavior modification, or puppy development to address specific challenges.
For pet parents, choosing a certified trainer like Kate Mahoney, ensures that your dog’s training is grounded in science, safety, and compassion. Asking about a trainer’s credentials is one of the best ways to make a confident, informed choice.
