It\u2019s now day five, and she isn\u2019t eating again\u2026not even treats. My dog has stopped eating. What should I do?&#8221; &#8211; Wanda, Columbia, South Carolina.<\/p>\n<h3>Hi Wanda,<\/h3>\n<p>A dog refusing food for several days, especially when it\u2019s inconsistent like this, is a serious concern. Here\u2019s what you should do ASAP:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Contact Your Veterinarian Right Away<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Loss of appetite for more than 24 hours in dogs can indicate illness, pain, or a more serious underlying medical issue. Because your dog has now gone several days with little or no food, she\/he could be at risk for\u00a0dehydration, liver problems, or other complications, especially if she\/he is a small breed or senior.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<h3><strong>Monitor for Other Symptoms<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Tell the vet if you notice any of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vomiting or diarrhea<\/li>\n<li>Lethargy or weakness<\/li>\n<li>Shivering or whining (possible sign of pain)<\/li>\n<li>Pale gums<\/li>\n<li>Labored breathing<\/li>\n<li>Sudden weight loss<\/li>\n<li>Refusing water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Possible Causes (Your Vet Will Help Diagnose)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Infections\u00a0(like gastrointestinal infections)<\/li>\n<li>Kidney or liver disease<\/li>\n<li>Pancreatitis<\/li>\n<li>Foreign object ingestion<\/li>\n<li>Dental pain<\/li>\n<li>Stress or anxiety<\/li>\n<li>Medications or recent vaccinations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Please Do Not Wait and See<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The &#8220;on and off&#8221; eating pattern can mean your dog is trying to eat but something is making it painful or nauseating. Dogs can\u00a0<em><strong>go downhill quickly<\/strong><\/em> when not eating.
